Smog

California highly regards the environment and climate change and has imposed regulations to ensure that all cars pass a smog test before running on state roads. When you’re due for a smog test, you can trust that the experts here at University Tire & Auto Service can help. Our shop is certified to do smog checks and repairs, however, we are not a STAR station.

While we may not be a STAR station, we are licensed to handle general smog tests and repairs here in California. We have invested in the equipment and testing systems necessary to effectively and efficiently test your vehicle to ensure that it meets the exhaust and emission levels required by law to keep your car registered.

At University Tire & Auto Service, we boast a team of trained ASE certified technicians who follow the standard testing procedures required by the state to accurately test your vehicle. They will check all systems connected with the car's emission systems to verify that your car meets the emissions standards that are required.

When performing a smog test, our auto repair professionals will conduct various inspections on different car components. They include:

  • Visual Inspections – These involve visual assessments of the emission control systems and components, ensuring that they are operating and fitted to the car properly.
  • Functional Inspection – Our technicians will perform functional inspections on the car's onboard diagnostics systems, verifying that the computerized system functions correctly. Additionally, they will diagnose the check engine light, exhaust gas recirculation systems, and ignition timing.
  • Tailpipe Inspection – At the rear-end of the exhaust system, we will test carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide levels to ensure that they meet Los Angeles, CA, requirements.

If you’re due for a smog test, the California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will dictate on your registration renewal that a smog test is required before you will be able to renew. There are some vehicles that are required to perform their Smog Check specifically at a STAR station, so please look at your registration renewal to see whether or not your car requires a STAR station to perform your testing. We are not a STAR station, but are licensed to handle regular smog tests.
